Having tackled zombies in Shaun of the Dead, Pegg and Wright focus their parodic magnifying glass on the cop movie. In tone, at least until the final reel, the film is surprisingly genteel, owing as much to Ealing comedies as to Lethal Weapon. Yet the observations are as acute as ever, with much homoerotic fun made at the expense of the fact that the Hollywood romance and buddy movie share a common story arc.

On DVD, too, these guys know how to treat their fans, with the extras seemingly thrown on with a trowel over two discs. The little known facts that emerge from the commentaries – all 27 known police sirens are mixed together at the start of the film, for instance – for once make them worth listening to.
